Autumnal Equinox

Happy belated Autumnal Equinox. I am several days late with this video, but I hope you will forgive me. It has been in the upper 80s and even reached 90F these past few days, so it has not yet felt Autumnal. The leaves are changing here in New York State, and the nights are cooling nicely, even in the past few days, so I have hope. I have also broken my pattern of always posting a Vivaldi piece for the season. If you miss Vivaldi, check the tags, and you will find all Four Seasons.

Enjoy the autumn scenes and the music.

Elegy for the Arctic

My friend, Jan Dobbs, whose art is here, posted this video on Twitter, and I had to share it.  In 2013, I was lucky enough to go on a cruise through the Inside Passage in Alaska.  The park rangers in Glacier Bay National Park were eloquent in how much global warming had changed the landscape, and I find this music very evocative of both the landscape and the warning.

Autumnal Equinox

I love living in a part of the world where the leaves change, the morning air is clear and crisp, and sitting outside with a cup of tea and a blanket on my lap is meditative.

My parents’ love of classical music was one of their gifts to me, and although I am late for the autumnal equinox, here is Vivaldi’s celebration of the season.

Summer arrives

My father grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts, and blamed being cold all his childhood for his love of summer, even in Atlanta, even without air conditioning.  He also loved classical music, which peopled my childhood with legends and stories. I didn’t even know the titles of much of the music I grew up with until I worked at an NPR station in graduate school, and a piece would throw me back into my parents’ living room, sitting on the floor in front of the record player.

It is going to be in the mid-90’s today in upstate New York, and I know my father would have loved to be in the backyard in the shade with a glass of iced tea.  Today I will play his favorite pieces, from Symphonie Fantastique to Adagio from Spartacus, and strive to enjoy the heat, in his honor.
